ABOUT
Eco/Future/Design is a residential design, planning, and construction consultancy based in the Northern Catskills Region of New York. We are dedicated to making design and construction approachable, accessible, buildable, collaborative, and ecologically responsible.
E/F/D supports the creation of beautiful, healthy, energy-efficient, comfortable, and durable buildings and outdoor spaces for people to live and work in. We live in upstate New York and work on projects throughout the Northeast.
Sunnie Joh is a building design and ecological site planning consultant. Her passions are contemporary and high-performance low-carbon building design, construction means and methods, and the design/build approach.
Sunnie has lived in the Catskills for over a decade. She started as a seasonal homesteader living in her off-grid, hand-built cabin in Hobart. Operating a residential design business since 2009, she founded E/F/D in 2019 to offer building design and ecologically responsible site planning services. After years of working with clients as a designer, site planner, and project manager, Sunnie transitioned E/F/D to a design and construction consultancy, offering her diverse skills and experience to a broader client base and making a more significant impact.
Before moving to upstate New York, Sunnie lived and worked as an architectural designer in New York City, where she was also the Program Director of the Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design. Through this grant-funded organization, Sunnie promoted environmental education, advocacy, and cross-disciplinary learning through public programming, exhibitions, publications, research, and special projects.
Sunnie enjoys being an active member of her local Catskills community; she has taught architectural design at SUNY Delhi, and helped to create Bushel Collective, a Delhi-based non-profit arts, agriculture, and advocacy organization. She is committed to building community resilience in the face of political and climate change. As the Executive Director of the Joh Foundation, a mission-driven family foundation supporting Korean American initiatives, Sunnie actively works toward creating meaningful impact beyond the ecological design sphere.
Sunnie received a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the Cooper Union School of Architecture (2004), a Master of Science in Ecological Design from the Conway School of Landscape Design (2018), and a Sustainable Building and Design Certification from Yestermorrow School (2011). Sunnie is a Certified Passive House Tradesperson (2025)
